Spotlight cover of Liss Romero's Contributions to The Storymodelers

Liss joined the Storymodelers in 2020. She is a master's student in Industrial Engineering at Universidad del Norte. She has incorporated innovative approaches to visualizing qualitative information through diagrams. She has applied statistical modeling and social network analysis to study community behavior and the dynamics of humanitarian aid.

With Liss reaching the end of her program and stepping into new opportunities, we take this moment to reflect on her impact in our lab and hear from her and her supervisors.

Supervisors' Reflections

Dr. Erika Frydenlund, Research Associate Professor, Virginia Modeling, Analysis, & Simulation Center, ODU

“Liss is a fun, vibrant, and extremely intelligent member of the Storymodelers community. She began with Storymodelers during the COVID-19 pandemic, working remotely to help process thousands of newspaper articles in collaboration with our research team in the US. Even though this was really outside her Industrial Engineering training, she embraced the challenge, effectively communicated and collaborated across languages and timezones, and helped to create the foundation for a project that shaped Storymodelers into the future. Since then, she’s grown into a highly competent and multifaceted researcher, doing both qualitative data collection and quantitative analysis. She has been an integral member of Storymodelers since nearly the beginning of our group, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for her and her cultivated talents!”

Dr. rer. nat. Humberto Llinas Solano, Professor, Universidad del Norte, Colombia

"It has been three years since I first met Liss in our research group, Storymodelers, and it has been an absolute privilege to witness her growth as a researcher, student and collaborator. She was one of my best students in the Multivariate Analysis course within the Master's in Data Analysis at the Universidad del Norte, and I can confidently say that her dedication, analytical skills and academic rigour set her apart. Beyond the classroom, Liss has been an invaluable member of our research team, bringing commitment, innovation and teamwork to every project. She is not only an exceptional academic, but also a true team player, always willing to collaborate, share ideas and support her colleagues. And, of course, no Storymodelers meeting would be complete without karaoke sessions! After observing her artistic talent, I have come to the conclusion that Liss has been, is and will forever be my karaoke partner, performing with me a varied list ranging from Spanish classics, romantic ballads, French songs, dance hits and even heartbreak anthems (because what's a good karaoke session without dramatic lyrics and passionate singing?). Liss, keep shining on your academic journey, and keep the research - and the music - going strong!”

Liss’ Experience with The Storymodelers

Liss Fandiñomasters in Industrial Engineering, Universidad del Norte, Colombia

"As a master's student and researcher at Storymodelers, I integrate engineering and social sciences to analyze complex contexts. My work explores migration policies through process diagrams, examines humanitarian aid for Venezuelan migrants in Colombia, and applies structural equation modeling to assess how perceptions of security influence well-being. This interdisciplinary approach has refined my analytical skills and reinforced my belief in the power of data to address social challenges."

Spotlight on Liss!

We’re thrilled to showcase Liss, an incredible master's student of industrial engineering at Universidad del Norte who joined Storymodelers in 2020.

Liss has been an essential part of our team, bringing innovation to qualitative data visualization through diagrams and applying statistical modeling and social network analysis to study community behavior and humanitarian aid dynamics.

Her dedication and creativity continue to inspire us all, and we look forward to seeing her grow even further. Keep shining, Liss!
